PCU Idaho crewmembers visit namesake state
230124-N-GR655-0012 BOISE, Idaho (January 24, 2023) – Lt. Cmdr. Darrell Smith, left center, executive officer of the future USS Idaho (SSN 799), and Lt. Beckett Lemley, left, the ship’s navigator, create pens with local woodworkers in Boise, Idaho, Jan. 24. The wood, sourced from a tree that was planted in Boise in 1890, the year Idaho became state. The woodworking event was part of a larger visit by members of the crew to their future Virginia-class submarine’s namesake state, where the sailors are learning more about Idaho’s rich history and military traditions, as well as sharing their Navy stories and building relationships in the community. The future USS Idaho is currently being built at General Dynamics Corp.’s Electric Boat shipyard in Groton, Connecticut, where the crew – known as a pre-commissioning unit (PCU) – is based.
