Rear Admiral Martin J. Muckian
Rear Adm.
Muckian is a native of Elmhurst, Illinois. He was commissioned in 1995 through
the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps at the University of Illinois, where
he earned a Bachelor‘s degree in Mechanical Engineering. He also holds a
Master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War
College.
A career
submariner, his operational tours include USS Greeneville (SSN 772), USS
Louisville (SSN 724) and USS Alexandria (SSN 757). He returned to USS
Greeneville (SSN 772) in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, as commanding officer from 2012
to 2014. During his tour, the ship completed two Western Pacific deployments
and the crew earned a Navy Unit Commendation, a Meritorious Unit Commendation,
and the Battle Efficiency Award for 2013 and 2014. He commanded Submarine
Squadron Six in Norfolk, Virginia. He served as the chief of staff to Commander
Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet.
In staff
positions, he served as flag aide to Commander, Submarine Group Eight in
Naples, Italy; two tours in the Bureau of Personnel: first as submarine officer
community manager and nuclear officer policy manager and then as special
assistant to the Chief of Naval Personnel; and as military assistant to the
Deputy Under Secretary and Under Secretary of Defense for Policy.
In his first
flag tour, he served as Commander, Undersea Warfighting Development Center.
Muckian assumed
his current duties in June, 2023 as Commander, Submarine Group TWO and Deputy
Commander, SECOND Fleet in Norfolk, Virginia.
His
personal decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of
Merit (four awards), Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine
Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement
Medal (two awards). He has served with crews that have earned four Battle
Efficiency awards and various unit and campaign awards.
